'And then there were none' , 'A murder is announced' are the only 2 books I've read of Agatha Christie. Needless to say, I'm making a goal of reading more of Agatha Christie's books this year.
This book is an absolute work of fear, joy and psychology. The dynamic characters really took off; the projection and the planning of the book is phenomenal.
Every small detail leading up to 10 murders with careful planning and making it impossible to solve the mystery, Agatha Christie outdid herself yet again. Each and every character was interwoven in their own stories and each and every one of them stuck to it. If this was a cold blooded murder in real life I can bet it would've taken at least 30 years (and I'm being generous) to crack this case.
10 people. 10 murder. No loose threads. None at all.
At the end of the book, a short epilogue exposed a conversation between the AC and his team. It was less of a conversation, more of a discussion about how and why the murders took place, for an avid reader, the takes were ridiculous.
But as a writer, it was one of the most important parts of the book that displayed into the setting and the minds of the characters itself making it all the more real. This book is so well written. Along the way the reader is also cracking the case.
By the middle, I was pretty sure that this particular character was the murderer. And then a few pages later I was thinking maybe not, maybe it's this character and not that.
Everything was so perfectly plotted out that even the readers had difficulty in finding out who the murderer actually is. The readers were presented with all the facts, the entry and the exit of the maze but it was still difficult to figure out who the murderer really was.
“When a man's neck's in danger, he doesn't stop to think too much about
sentiment.” - Agatha Christie, And Then There Were None
I was in a reader's block and this book really helped get in touch with my inner Rory gilmore.
As a reader, it confused me, wounded me and took me on an adventure of a lifetime. The pictures this book painted. The descriptions were tailored in a manner as if it was a movie I was watching without the subtitles. Moreover, with this book making it to the big screens, the story came to life easily in my mind and I was hooked from day 1.
It completely went off the bar I set for my expectations and exceeded it. The 4 stars if not 5 are truly deserving. I'll take off the 1 star because there should've been trigger warnings added in scenes which are psychological and harmful. After all, it is a murder mystery.
I would definitely, definitely recommend reading it if you're in for a thriller. Happy reading!
