Hi!
A few months back i re-read “Looking for Alaska” written by none other than John Green. BTW, this one’s going to be a loooooooong newsletter. Anyway, I read that, alright cool. The book was beautiful. Simply beautiful.
Seriously, you guys, another masterpiece. (This is not a paid promotion lol)
The first time I read the book I remember lying in the grey couch in my living room; the light was reflecting off the tiny gaps of white in between the black type, absorbing the light. My arms were sore from holding the book for so long as my eyes started drooping. After a few times of hastily closing and opening my eyes, I got up and kept the book, unmitigatedly revolted at its lack of interesting content.
Fast forward 2 years (give or take a few months). I picked the book once again, determined to understand its content. I have to tell you reading that book and learning so much was nothing short of a very interesting experience especially when I wasn’t exactly a big fan of it the first time.
Have you ever tried to describe any book or article or any piece of writing with 2 or 3 words? Well, a little task for you - try describing your favorite book or any article that made you a better person in 2 or 3 words. That being said, if I were to describe ‘looking for Alaska’ I'd describe it in these words - booze, daisies and labyrinths.
The main reason behind writing this blog is at the end of ‘looking for Alaska’ there were a few questions. I guess because this book was used as a literature book in schools before it was banned. Anyhow, from those questions i answered one, here it is-
“Is forgiveness universal? I mean, is forgiveness really available to people, no matter the circumstances? Is it, for instance, possible for the dead to forgive the living, and the living to forgive the dead?”
Now, feel free to ponder upon this question and you can mail them to me in subhaamahmud@gmail.com (if you want)
Now then, here’s my answer (i hope you are not bored reading till here) :
There's a simple answer to this question, which I do not know. I do not simply understand the concept of universal forgiveness. Forgiveness is a trait some would feel superior if they have it and some on the other hand would be soft and kind about it. But if I say forgiveness is different for each person, then I'll be wrong.
Forgiveness is simply the act of letting go, trying to see their pov, accepting and moving on. It is important.
In fact, I think it is the most important trait a person can possess. But is Forgiveness universal? I solely hope it is, but I do not know. For I will not understand people and the grudges they hold. But there's one thing I can do, I can forgive. I can feel and empathise. I can try to understand. See how 'I' is emphasised here. Exactly. I am, unmistakably, talking for myself. I do not know what you feel, or the reason behind your unforgiving behaviour.
Forgiveness, is, I daresay, infinite. At least for me. I do not know your mind, therefore I do not know if it's universal. But I know it is infinite. It doesn't need anything other than kindness and love and respect and belief. These traits are infinite. Hence, Forgiveness is infinite.
While we are on the subject, it is indeed possible for the living to forgive the dead (according to me, I may be wrong)
It's more like a duty. I believe that doesn't matter who you were to a person, they'd forgive you at some point or the other, whether you are gone, or still here. That being said, I think when you die, you decompose, your soul goes to a place you'd never been, but it is not destroyed, it's like energy. It's like love. It's actually a lot like love than we understand. Love doesn't disappear, it stays like gas in the air. Around you, inside you and within you. Similarly, when you die, you are time, love, and gas. And as science has so lovingly pointed out that gas molecules move randomly and freely they do not stay put in one place, but they keep on moving, and there are hundreds of them, they are infinite.
